Empowerment through beadwork

“I have always been a deeply creative person and a natural storyteller, but it wasn’t until beading found me that I felt truly confident to step into my full creative potential. For me, beading is an intergenerational act of reclamation. Through the creations left behind by my grandmother, the magic of beadwork was passed on to me. From looking at her beadwork in awe as a child, to the feeling of empowerment that came from wearing beaded earrings for the first time, to learning how to make my very own… the magic of hand-made beadwork is something that’s so obvious once you experience it. It’s a tiny piece of someone’s story. It’s a memory that lives forever. It’s generations of love in the palm of your hand. It is full of love and light and spirit.

I want to share the magic that I make with the world. I bead for my grandmother. I share my work in her honour. I am her legacy and the pieces that I put out into the world are mine. It’s about keeping our culture alive through the generations even when whose who came before us are no longer here.

Even when we are gone, the magic remains.”
